Dr. Andrew Christensen, Ph.D., psychologist
Andrew Christensen is Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He studies couple conflict and couple therapy and has published over 150 professional articles. For therapists, he authored Acceptance and Change in Couple Therapy: A therapist’s guide for transforming relationships (1998, Norton) with Neil S. Jacobson. He also completed a trade book for couples, Reconcilable Differences (2000, 2014, Guilford) with Jacobson and Doss. Both books describe their therapeutic approach, Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT). Christensen is an international renown trainer and has presented workshops on IBCT worldwide. His therapy and research have been cited in the Washington Post, New York Times, Newsweek, Time Magazine, and other magazines and newspapers.
Description
In an effort to improve the outcome of couples therapy, Andrew Christensen of UCLA and the late Neil Jacobson of the University of Washington developed Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (IBCT), which integrates strategies for promoting acceptance in couples with the traditional behavioral strategies for promoting change in couples. "Acceptance work" focuses on turning problems into vehicles for promoting intimacy and increasing couples' tolerance for what they see as each other's negative behavior. As couples let go of the struggle to change one another, change often occurs in response to natural contingencies. Several clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of IBCT. IBCT has also been adapted into an online program, www.OurRelationship.com ; a recent clinical trial showed the effectiveness of that program.
In this two-day workshop, the trainer will provide the theoretical background, the assessment strategies, the treatment strategies, and the empirical support for Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT). The workshop will illustrate assessment and treatment techniques through videotaped examples from couples in treatment and provide role-play experiences in implementing these techniques.

Objectives
