Dr Rachel Green, Ph. D., is a psychologist, psychotherapist and trainer in private practice. She is a member of Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) since 2008 and has been facilitating workshops in Motivational Interviewing locally and internationally since since then. Dr. Green is appreciated as much for her rigor as a facilitator as for her ability to mix humor and concrete examples in her workshops.
The idea of motivation seems abstract when we’re faced with a client who is suffering and is seemingly eager to change but struggles to move into action and maintain his/her efforts towards that change. Faced with these types of situations, the therapist tries, with little success, to convince the client, arguing for, and defending the need for the change. Motivational Interviewing proposes a very different path to change, one that is more effecient. Motivational Interviewing skills were originally developed by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick in the early 1980s in their work with clients who misused alcohol. Today, the application of Motivational Interviewing is no longer limited to substance misuse treatment, but is integrated in many different types of psychotherapeutic treatments and psychosocial rehabilitation, among others. Motivational Interviewing is a useful approach where a change is recommended in adopting new behaviors, mitigating certain harmful habits (such as misuse of alcohol and drugs, gambling, etc.) or in the course of making lifestyle changes in general.
